About Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are nocturnal insects. They begin as an almost translucent, oval shaped, wingless arthropod that is barely visible to the human eye, about 1/16 inch(1.6mm). They go through 5 nymphal phases of feeding and malting before they become adults, turning red-brown in color and growing up to roughly ¼-3/16 inch (5-9mm) long. This process takes 21-45 days. They can live over one year, and can survive up to nine months without feeding.
These parasites are capable of going dormant in the winter, but will only do so if temperatures cool while remaining above freezing. When the ambient temperature is above 80 degrees bed bugs thrive, accelerating their activity. To ensure no bed bugs survive based on temperature alone, they and the surfaces they are hiding in would need to be stored below freezing or above 120 degrees for a period of time.

Bed Bug Reproduction

The reproduction cycle of bed bugs is rapid. These pests mate for life, and lay 1-6 eggs a day thereafter. With such expansive reproduction rates and such short periods from the nymphal phase to adulthood, it is no wonder they can expand so rapidly after gaining a foothold somewhere.

Difficult Bed Bug Situations

There are several challenges in addressing bed bugs infestations. In recent decades, a series of changes including increasing population density, increased shipping and travel, and increasing insecticide resistance have all contributed to a resurgence of these pests. Hiring a pest control company to eradicate the infestation can be expensive, it is not uncommon for people to attempt on their own first. Unfortunately, their exoskeletons do adapt to the things they have been exposed to, so failed attempts build their resistance to chemicals. Pest control professionals are constantly shifting between products to keep up with these adaptations, making bed bugs the most difficult to eradicate in the entire pest control industry.
