Benefits Of Abra Kadabra’s Attic Insulation Service

Many homes lack proper insulation, so Abra Kadabra added this valuable service to our host of offerings. In Minnesota, Energystar.gov recommends between 16 and 18 inches of blown in insulation for your attic space. The purpose of this insulation is to retain energy in the form of heat and minimize energy output. If less than 16 inches of insulation is present in your home, there is potential for ice dams to build up on the exterior.

This service is designed to not only improve your home efficiency and prevent ice dams, but also provide additional benefits. Our attic insulation installation experts install fiberglass, cellulose, or borate-infused cellulose insulation (TAP) depending on the application and customer preference.

TAP Insulation

Our borate-infused cellulose insulation can prevent some of the most common attic insect infestations. Common pest issues in the attic: spiders, stinging insects, carpet beetles (feeding on rodenticide or deceased rodents), boxelder bugs, lady asian beetles, bat bugs and others. This material is both more mold and mildew resistant, and more fire resistant than traditional foam based insulations. Even better, this insulation is significantly less environmentally impactful to create, in comparison with foam insulations- over 87% of this material is made using recycled newspaper.

3 Reasons Why Your Home Needs New Insulation

1. Adding insulation to your home can have massive energy savings by raising your R-value:

Compromised insulation thickness leads to decreased energy retention and increased heating and cooling costs. If you will be living in your home for more than 1 year, you may be able to offset the cost of adding insulation to your attic through the energy savings it will provide to you. It is common for homes to experience up to 30% savings or greater reduction in their energy costs after bringing insulation up to par.

2. Lowered R-value creates potential for ice dams and water damage:

Lower heat retention leads to snow melt above the affected area, leading to melting then freezing lower down, preventing melted water from draining off the roof. This refreezing is observed as ice dams, a buildup of ice whose weight can damage your roof, gutters, and soffits. Water at and above these areas can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and other areas. This damage can open the door for Carpenter Ants to create a satellite nesting location, a phenomenon frequently noted by our wildlife technicians.

3. TAP Insulation (borate infused insulation) prevents bug infestations:

Borate infused insulation will prevent insects such as lady asian beetles, boxelders, wasps, hornets, stinging insects, stink bugs and other insects from intruding your home through the attic space. This green insecticide is an additional level of protection for your home and all of its occupants.

Ice Dam Formation & Consequences

Ice dams form when the snow on a roof surface that is above freezing will melt. As melted snow (water) flows down the roof, it eventually reaches the portion of the roof that is below 32º F and freezes. This causes the ice dam.

As snow continues to melt, it builds up at the “dam” portion of the roof (only in areas below 32º F) where the water will back up behind the ice dam while remaining liquid. This water may find cracks and openings in the exterior of the roof coverings which may allow the water to back up into the home resulting in water damage.

The dam grows as it is fed by the melting snow above it, but it will limit itself to the portions of the roof that average below 32º F. So the water above backs up behind the ice dam and remains a liquid. This water finds cracks and openings in the exterior roof covering and flows into the attic space. From the attic it could flow into exterior walls or through the ceiling insulation and stain the ceiling finish.
