Contrary to popular belief, bats are not out to chase us down and suck our blood like Dracula. Though they do fly erratically and can look menacing, that’s simply because it gives them a better chance to catch the flying insects that they’ll feast on later.
However, if bats get into your home, they can be dangerous in a few ways. First, their droppings can be a major source of zoonotic diseases such as histoplasmosis. You can contract histoplasmosis by breathing in fungal spores which can cause a potentially life-threatening respiratory infection. Additionally, bats can carry rabies and should you get bitten, you could end up getting sick. If possible, capture the bat that bit you so it can be tested for rabies. It’s also important to contact your doctor if you discover bats in your home. This way, he or she can monitor you and your family for any illnesses that are associated with being exposed to bats.
