Seeing a termite swarm is a telltale indicator that you’ve got an issue. These swarms typically occur around windows because termites are attracted to light. Since swarmers don’t hang around that long, you might not end up actually seeing them flying but later may discover their wings or their dead bodies piled up along your windowsill. In the event any are seen, they will have two sets of equal length wings.
Another sign is the presence of mud tubes, which are typically the width of a No. 2 pencil and serve as a connection between underground soil and above-ground food sources such as damp woods within your home or in nature. These tubes are built from a mixture of saliva, soil and bodily fluids and they serve to protect the termites from predators and dry air. Termites will never operate in the open without these tubes, as they are necessary for their survival.
A few other indicators to be on the lookout for include an irregular, rippled appearance on the surface of drywall, sheetrock and moldings or peeling, buckling or bubbling on painted surfaces or wood flooring. Sometimes you can even hear termites making noise behind your walls.
Termites create smooth-walled galleries in wood. Damp and water compromised woods typically are excavated into galleries, while new woods are skimmed along in a trench like fashion. These pests excavate with the grain, and are known to move into galleries created by Carpenter ants.
