Identifying A Raccoon Problem
The raccoon is easy to identify with its black mask and fluffy, striped tail. Don’t let their cat-like appearance deceive you, as they are capable of doing harm to properties, animals and humans.
A raccoon’s main goal is to seek food and shelter. They are omnivores and will eat almost anything they can get their hands on. They will eat everything from fruits, nuts, plants and meat. Since they have the ability to open garage bins, they often times are found in the garbage eating leftovers that people have thrown out. Since raccoons are nocturnal, they are most active at night, which is when they are out scrounging for food. They mainly reside in wooded areas, oftentimes making their own dens out of the hollow trees. They will travel up to 18 miles in search of food. Their curiosity, intelligence, dexterity, and climbing skills allow them to do quite a bit of damage to properties.
Forms of Raccoon Damage
Raccoons can cause a significant amount of damage to properties, but below are the most common signs of a raccoon problem:
- Tipped trash cans
- Holes in siding
- Damaged gardens
- Torn shingles
In addition to causing property damage, raccoons are also carriers of several diseases that can be transmitted through a bite, including rabies. Due to the risk of disease, it’s highly important that homeowners call professionals if they have a raccoon problem.
