State law mandates that we cannot let wildlife loose on any property without the consent of the property owner, nor can we release it on public land. If a raccoon is relocated too near to the capture site, they are likely to return. Further away and the translocation survival rate becomes an issue. Studies have found that within 2 months of translocation, 20-36% of raccoons die. Within a year, that figure rises to 50%. The reason for this mortality issue is that wildlife are placed into an unfamiliar environment without knowledge of where to find shelter and resources, in direct competition with wildlife that does know the area. Translocation can also result in spread of wildlife diseases to other populations. Because of these factors, the National Wildlife Control Operator’s Association (NWCOA) and Wildlife Biologists recommend euthenasia over translocation.
