Beavers are a primarily nocturnal, semi-aquatic rodent, the largest in North America. They can grow up to 31 inches in length, and typically weigh between 35 and 66 pounds. They have short legs, small rounded ears, and large hind feet with webbing between the digits. Beavers have (color) fur and a distinctive paddle shaped tail that can grow up to 18 inches in length. They possess sharp incisors and lips that can close behind their teeth, allowing them to swim while carrying branches in their mouth.
Beavers are herbivores and will consume both green and woody plants. Preferred food sources are the bark of aspen, poplar, willow, alder and red maple. Lily pad roots are also a favorite. Here in Minnesota, beavers will create large underwater food caches to help them get through the winter. Beaver will drop many trees in the late fall in order to build these food caches.
